If you paased your driving test after 1997 then you wont have the licence to tow any trailer or caravan over 750kgs..

What can you do.. You can take an additional test for B+E in towing trailers.

This test is at a much higher standard than the normal Learner test and lasts for just over

one hour. Covering all types of roads including country lanes and Motorways.

Often the route taken can venture off into different towns where you may never have driven in. You will need to be very aware of any pitfalls like speed changes, one way streets, stop junctions. Get any of these wrong and you will fail. {expert tuition is required}

You will need to undertake some expert training off a driving school like ours who specialise in towing lessons and tests.

As well as the drive there are additional manoeuvres which need to be completed before the drive element of the test.

1 Reverse from one set of cones to another.

2 Un couple and re couple of the trailer.

3 Emergency stop.

This can take up to 20 minutes to complete before the drive is started. {plenty of concentration is required}

ONE Maghull driving school is steering its way to success despite the world-wide economic downturn.

Paul Spencer has been operating Learn Our Way since 2002 at Sefton Lane Industrial Estate, and has been a driving instructor for 13 years.

His business is both a driving and an instructor training school.
Paul said: “We train people to become driving instructors and we operate a franchise of driving instructors to learner drivers when they call up.

“The business has always done well – our driving school has the highest pass rate in the north west with 84 per cent, nationally it is 44 per cent.

“Any decent driving school should always show the pass rate to the learner.”

Paul’s driving instructor training side also exceeds the national average, and he says the business is going from strength to strength.
He added: “The downturn has not affected us as much because there are people who still need to learn to drive and I think the quality of training has helped.
“It is going fairly well. I started expanding six months ago, normally we have six instructors on the franchise books and we have eight.

“I have a couple of instructors who have been with us for four years.
“We are still improving the business which is good – this is down to the way we teach and recommendations.

“I want to build this up to 20 instructors in the Liverpool area, and cover Wirral where we have two instructors, plus I have some in training now in Southport, Ormskirk and Burscough.

“We are trying to provide for long term instructors, we have an office for telephone bookings and a classroom for both learners and instructors.”
Paul is a member of Altside Business Village.
He said: “Altside Business village is a great way for businesses to mix with other businesses – a social network and to help each other.”

Approaching Bends

On approach to a bend you should adopt the routine below.

1. Use the MSM routine

2. Reduce speed

3. Assess the sharpness of the bend

4. Match your speed to the gear you require for the bend

5. Position to the left for a right bend /position in the centre of your lane for a left bend

6. After the bend use the MSM routine - check the mirrors and build up speed if safe to do so.
